How to Prepare for Your New German Shepherd Puppy

October 17, 2021

German Shepherds are popular dogs. They have very recognizable features and are intelligent. While they make great pets, there are a few things that you should know before adding a German Shepherd puppy to your family. Because they are such a popular breed of dog, oftentimes people are unaware of just how much work goes into raising a German Shepard puppy.

Preparing Your Home

As they are very intelligent, German shepherd puppies are very curious. This means that if they have the opportunity to get into something they're curious about, you had better believe that they will try. Make sure that anything that is poisonous is put away in cabinets that are not easy to open. If you have lower cabinets, consider installing child locks on them until your puppy is trained and more mature. With a puppy, it's always a good idea to keep it in your line of sight when you are home. Using a baby gate can allow you to block off other areas of your home.

Your German Shepard puppy will need a safe and comfortable spot to sleep. Have a wire crate ready before you bring your puppy home. This is a space where they can sleep and go if they are feeling overwhelmed. Covering it with a blanket, having proper bedding that can not be easily destroyed, and providing a toy such as a teething toy can make them feel comfortable. Their crate should not be used as a form of punishment.

Proper Training

German Shepards can be very gentle, yet protective, but this requires proper training. Without proper training or socialization, German Shepards can exhibit what is called 'guarding', where they can be overly protective of their owners and display outward aggression towards other people or animals.

Because German Shepherds grow to be large dogs, this behavior needs to be identified and prevented as soon as you get your German Shepard puppy. According to Hill's Pet, German Shepards on average reach a height of 25 inches. A healthy weight for the breed is around 95 pounds (41 kilograms).

Bringing Your Puppy Home

Before you bring your German Shepard puppy home, be sure to have it properly puppy-proofed, create a schedule, and purchase plenty of toys to keep your new puppy engaged. Take some time to read up more on proper training methods to ensure that you have the perfect companion for your family.
